Tell us what your Alcona door is doing

We plan visits around how people in Alcona live. A shop wants the work done before opening or after close. A family wants a time when someone is home and the dog is put away. A landlord wants the unit done between tenants. Tell us the window that suits you and we build the day around it, then call when the van is on its way.

Shop rules

Sound hardware, straight answers.

  1. Questions welcomed. Ask about the lock, the method, the parts or the reasoning. A good explanation is part of the service, not a favour.
  2. Nothing forced that could be finessed. We reach for picks and shims before drills, and we tell you if the lock has left us no gentle option.
  3. Swept, wiped and working. Metal filings, drywall dust and old screws all leave with us. The lock is tested from both sides and the key handed over.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Ask us what the visit involves.

How a visit goes

Older houses around here have older doors, and older doors have their own logic. A mortise lock from the 1920s was built to be serviced, not thrown away, and a rim lock on a back porch may simply need cleaning and a new spring.

    Call and describe the door

    On our way

You tell us what is happening with the door, who has keys and what you would like to be different afterwards. We ask a few questions so we arrive with the right parts.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 35 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 35% of homes in Innisfil were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 90% of homes in Innisfil (2021 Census).Garage entry doors on detached houses are often the household's real front door, used more than the formal entry. They deserve the same quality of lock, and keying them alike with the house means one key does the whole daily routine.

Ask us anything about locks

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?

Rekeying keeps the lock you have and changes only the pins inside the cylinder so a new key operates it and the old one no longer does. It suits hardware that is in good shape and simply needs a fresh key. Replacing swaps the whole lock or cylinder for new hardware, which makes sense when the existing lock is worn, damaged, of low grade, or when you want a different style or a keypad. Either can be done during a lockout visit.

Is there anything different about steel or fibreglass doors?

The lock hardware is the same; the door construction changes the method. Steel and fibreglass doors have a wooden or composite block inside the lock stile, and existing bores are used wherever possible. Where a new deadbolt must be added, the locksmith drills with a jig and bits suited to the skin so the hole is clean and square, and fits an edge plate designed for that door. Insulated doors also move less with humidity, so alignment tends to hold well.

How long does servicing a mortise lock take?

A single entry lock that needs cleaning, springs and a strike adjustment is generally done in one visit of an hour or two. Filing a bit key adds bench time, and a set of interior latches is longer simply because there are more of them. A case that needs a part fabricated, or a replacement case that has to be ordered to size, may mean a second visit; the locksmith says so at the assessment.

Do I need to prove the mailbox is mine before you change the lock?

Yes, and it takes only a moment. For a house or a standalone box, an address match usually settles it. For one compartment in a shared building panel, a lease, a deed, a unit number matching the building's own records, or confirmation from the property manager does the job. This step protects every household on the same panel, including whoever calls next.
