- The call
- A roommate tried to help with tweezers, then by gluing the other half to it. The fragment is now further in than it started, there is dried glue around the keyway, and the front door still does not open.

The padlock on the shed has been stiff all summer. Today the key twisted, cracked at the tip, and left the end buried deep in the keyway.
A car key that breaks in the door or the ignition is handled with the same extraction tools, with one difference. On most vehicles the plastic head of the key carries the transponder chip and the remote buttons, and that half is usually intact in your hand. Once the blade is drawn out of the lock, a new blade can often be cut and fitted to the existing head, so the chip keeps talking to the car without reprogramming. The ignition wafers are checked for disturbance and the steering lock is confirmed free. Proof of ownership is asked for before work begins.

Broken Key Extraction · Cookstown

Scene 1
A car adds a few questions. Did the key break in the door, the trunk or the ignition? Does the head in your hand hold a transponder chip or remote, and does the car start with the spare if there is one? Is the steering wheel locked, which can hold an ignition cylinder under tension and pin the fragment in place? Do the other doors open with the same key, or is the vehicle on a different key for the ignition and doors? These answers decide whether the job is a door extraction and a new blade, or an ignition extraction that needs the wheel freed and the wafers checked first.
Scene 2
Nothing slides out of a rotated plug, because the pins that the key lifted are still sitting at the shear line and holding the blade. So when the key snapped mid-turn, the first job is to return the plug to its resting position. The locksmith applies gentle rotational pressure with a tension tool, feeling for the point where the pins drop back into the plug and the keyway lines up with the cylinder body. Sometimes a light tap on the face helps the pins settle. Only once the plug is at rest is the fragment free to move, and only then do the extractors go in.
Scene 3
If the bolt had been dragging in its strike, that is corrected while the locksmith is there, because a bolt that binds turns every key into a lever. Dropped hinges get longer screws driven into the framing; a strike pocket that pinches the bolt is filed or shifted; a weatherstrip that was pushing the door off square is pared back. The test is simple: the thumb-turn should throw the bolt with one finger and no push on the door. Since wood swells in humid summers and shrinks in dry winter air, a seasonal glance at the screws keeps the key from taking the strain again.

Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.
On a standard door cylinder the keyway is closed at the back by the plug and the tailpiece, so there is no straight path through. What a locksmith can do is remove the cylinder, take off the cap, and push the plug out of its housing with a follower, which frees the fragment from behind. That is done on the bench, not by forcing anything from the inside of the door.
Put both halves of the key somewhere safe, note whether the door or vehicle is locked, and leave the keyway alone. If it is bitter cold, keep the storm door closed so the lock is not taking freezing rain. Have identification ready, or vehicle papers for a car. If the door is open, stay near it. That is all; the extraction goes smoother for a lock nobody has poked at.
