2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 35 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 35% of homes in Innisfil were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Mixed housing stock keeps a locksmith versatile. A morning might be a heritage mortise lock rebuilt and an afternoon a smart lock paired to a phone on a steel door. The same care goes into both, with tools and parts for each.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 90% of homes in Innisfil (2021 Census).Families in houses hand keys to children, cleaners, dog walkers and neighbours. A locksmith can set up a keypad on the side door for the household and keep the front door on a conventional key, so access matches how the family actually comes and goes.

Every copy of your house key seems to work a little differently. One needs a jiggle, another sticks halfway, and the original wore down years ago.

The call
There are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you can switch off.

Master Key System Design

Two rows of lock cylinders on a metal surface with keys and colored key tags in front. — Master Key System Design, Leonards Beach
The call
After a busy shift the manager counts the keys coming back in and loses track of who still has one. The walk-in cooler, the liquor cage and the office desk are all supposed to be separate, but the same battered key seems to fit two of them.

ScaleNot to scale

High security cylinders come in rim, mortise, knob, lever and interchangeable-core formats, so almost any existing lock body can be upgraded. The page describes how we assess what you have and choose a cylinder that fits it.

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The keys the seller handed over came in a sandwich bag: six unlabelled copies for two locks of different makes from different decades. You have no idea how many more copies exist or who is holding them.

You came home to find the front door standing open. The deadbolt is still thrown, but the strike plate is dangling from one screw and a fist-sized piece of the jamb is lying on the hall floor.

Ask us anything about locks

How many new keys will I get, and can I get more later?

As many as you ask for, cut on site from the fresh pinning and tested in each door they should open; two or three is typical for a household. More can be cut later. When you do, bring one of the locksmith's originals to be copied rather than a copy of a copy, since every generation strays slightly from the intended depths. If any key is a restricted type, additional copies come from the record kept for that system rather than from a hardware store.

Will drilling a new deadbolt damage my steel or fibreglass door?

Not when it is done for that door. Steel-clad doors are cut with a fine-toothed hole saw run slowly through the skin, guided by a jig so the saw cannot skate on the smooth face, and finished from both sides so each skin stays clean. Fibreglass is scored first so the surface does not chip. Shavings are vacuumed from the foam core, and the edge is finished with a collar or plate suited to the stile inside.

The house came with a smart lock. Can you make it mine?

Yes, and it is treated as a fresh installation rather than a hand-me-down. The lock is reset to factory settings using the maker's procedure, which wipes codes, schedules and paired phones, then enrolled to an account you create. Anything else that could open it, such as a hub or a voice assistant, gets its own check, because those permissions sit outside the lock. The override cylinder is rekeyed, batteries replaced and firmware updated. If the hardware is worn, replacing it is the cleaner choice.

What happens if a master-level key goes missing?

The current chart shows exactly which doors that level was designed to reach, which for a lost top-level master can mean the whole property rather than one group. Depending on how the key was lost and who else already holds that level, the usual options are repinning the affected cylinders and reissuing keys to the remaining holders; a restricted keyway lowers the odds of an unauthorized copy being cut but is not proof that one has not been made. Without a current chart, the first task is reconstructing that scope.
