Glass knobs, ornate escutcheons and mortise cases that have turned for generations deserve a locksmith who knows them. In Cedar Harbour we clean, rebuild and re-spring old mechanisms, cut keys for locks that no longer have one, and match period-appropriate parts so the door keeps its face.

Lock work makes brass shavings, sawdust and small parts that roll under furniture. In Cedar Harbour homes we lay a drop sheet, catch what falls, and vacuum before we go. The door gets wiped down, the old keys are handed back or taken away as you prefer, and the only sign we were there is a lock that turns without complaint.

Shop rules

Sound hardware, straight answers.

  1. Questions welcomed. Ask about the lock, the method, the parts or the reasoning. A good explanation is part of the service, not a favour.
  2. Nothing forced that could be finessed. We reach for picks and shims before drills, and we tell you if the lock has left us no gentle option.
  3. Swept, wiped and working. Metal filings, drywall dust and old screws all leave with us. The lock is tested from both sides and the key handed over.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Ask us what the visit involves.

How a visit goes

Older houses around here have older doors, and older doors have their own logic. A mortise lock from the 1920s was built to be serviced, not thrown away, and a rim lock on a back porch may simply need cleaning and a new spring.

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    On our way

You tell us what is happening with the door, who has keys and what you would like to be different afterwards. We ask a few questions so we arrive with the right parts.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 35 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 35% of homes in Innisfil were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where housing ages are mixed, some homes have never had a deadbolt and others have two. The visit starts with a look at what is already there, and the recommendation might be adding a lock on one house and simply tuning it on the next.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 90% of homes in Innisfil (2021 Census).Where most homes are detached houses, each one has several exterior doors: front, side, back, garage entry, sometimes a walkout. Getting them all onto one key is the most requested job, and it usually takes a single visit.

Ask us anything about locks

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?

Rekeying keeps the lock you have and changes only the pins inside the cylinder so a new key operates it and the old one no longer does. It suits hardware that is in good shape and simply needs a fresh key. Replacing swaps the whole lock or cylinder for new hardware, which makes sense when the existing lock is worn, damaged, of low grade, or when you want a different style or a keypad. Either can be done during a lockout visit.

Will my door be boarded up, or can it be made to lock tonight?

Most forced doors lock again during the visit. If the slab and frame are sound, a new lockset goes in and the strike is reinforced. If the jamb is split, a repair plate or a boxed strike screwed into the stud usually holds it. Boarding is reserved for openings where the frame or the door itself is destroyed, and even then it is fitted so the household can get out from inside without a key.

How many new keys will I get, and can I get more later?

As many as you ask for, cut on site from the fresh pinning and tested in each door they should open; two or three is typical for a household. More can be cut later. When you do, bring one of the locksmith's originals to be copied rather than a copy of a copy, since every generation strays slightly from the intended depths. If any key is a restricted type, additional copies come from the record kept for that system rather than from a hardware store.

Will drilling a new deadbolt damage my steel or fibreglass door?

Not when it is done for that door. Steel-clad doors are cut with a fine-toothed hole saw run slowly through the skin, guided by a jig so the saw cannot skate on the smooth face, and finished from both sides so each skin stays clean. Fibreglass is scored first so the surface does not chip. Shavings are vacuumed from the foam core, and the edge is finished with a collar or plate suited to the stile inside.
