Smart Lock Installation

Arthritis has made the small house key hard to grip and turn, especially with gloves on in January. Pressing a few buttons, or tapping a fob against the lock, would make coming home in winter far easier.

In plain words

Smart lock installation puts an electronic deadbolt or lever on your door that opens with a code, a phone, a fob or a fingerprint, and, on some models, a conventional key too. The locksmith confirms you control the property, measures the door and its holes, and makes sure the bolt travels freely, because a battery motor has less strength than a hand. The hardware is fitted with a solid strike, the maker's specified batteries go in, and the lock is set up under your own account. You leave with codes working and, on a keyed model, the override key tested and the old key retired.

The call
There are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you can switch off.

How the visit goes

Illustrative locksmith scene — Crescent Harbour
  1. Scene 1

Measuring the door and its holes

Smart locks are built around the standard residential preparation, so the locksmith measures before choosing. Door thickness is usually between 35 and 45 millimetres; thicker doors need an extension kit and very thin ones may need a different model. The large cross bore for the cylinder, the smaller edge bore for the bolt and the backset from the door edge to the centre of the hole are each checked against the new lock's range. A lever set also needs the handing confirmed. Steel and fibreglass doors, doors with a mortise pocket from an older lock, and doors with glass close to the handle each change what will fit and how it is mounted.

  2. Scene 2

Rekeying the override so the old key retires

Most keypad deadbolts keep a small conventional backup cylinder, and leaving it on the old key would undo half the point of the upgrade. The locksmith removes it, slides the plug out with a follower, repins it to a fresh combination, then cuts and tests new keys. Where the household wants one key for everything and the cylinders share a compatible keyway, the back and side doors are rekeyed to the same combination so a single key runs the override and the mechanical locks alike. Some makers reset the cylinder with a tool and the new key rather than by repinning; the method changes, the outcome is the same. The old key no longer opens any cylinder that was rekeyed.

  3. Scene 3

A cleaner handover at the next turnover

For a rental or a shared home, the real payoff arrives at the next change of occupant. Instead of collecting keys and wondering about copies, you delete the departing tenant's code, add one for the incoming tenant and confirm the change in the app. The small register the locksmith helped you start shows who still has access and which codes are due to expire. Any guest, cleaner or contractor codes that belong to the old arrangement go at the same time. The override key stays under your control and is handed over or rekeyed as the tenancy rules and your own preference require, so the door changes hands with nothing left behind.

In the van

What shapes the quoteBell Ewart Lock Services

Taking over an existing smart lock
Resetting, re-enrolling and cleaning the permissions on a lock that came with the property is a different job from fitting new hardware: less cutting, more account work, and it is quoted on its own footing.
Supplying the lock yourself
If you have already bought a lock, the quote covers fitting and setup only, with a note on whether the chosen model suits your door; if the locksmith supplies it, the hardware is listed alongside.
Number of doors
A single front door is the base case. Adding the back door, the garage entry or a side door, whether each gets its own smart lock or is rekeyed to match the override key, extends the visit accordingly.

Ask us anything about locks

The house came with a smart lock. Can you make it mine?

Yes, and it is treated as a fresh installation rather than a hand-me-down. The lock is reset to factory settings using the maker's procedure, which wipes codes, schedules and paired phones, then enrolled to an account you create. Anything else that could open it, such as a hub or a voice assistant, gets its own check, because those permissions sit outside the lock. The override cylinder is rekeyed, batteries replaced and firmware updated. If the hardware is worn, replacing it is the cleaner choice.

What happens when the batteries die?

The lock warns you well before that point, with a light or tone at the keypad and, on connected models, a message to your phone. If the warnings are missed, a keyed model's mechanical override still opens the door, while a key-free model instead has two small contacts on the outside where a nine-volt battery gives it enough power to accept a code. The locksmith shows you each route your model offers and where the spare batteries and the key should live.

Will summer heat behind my storm door damage the lock?

It can stress it, and it is one of the first things the locksmith looks at. A full-glass storm door on a south- or west-facing entrance can push the air between the doors well above what electronics are rated for on a hot afternoon. The usual answers are a storm door with a vent or screen, swapping to the screen panel for summer, or a model whose maker rates it for that exposure. With that handled, the lock is fine.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 35 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 35% of homes in Innisfil were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area of varied housing ages, rekeying is the one job that fits every door. Old cylinders and new ones both take fresh pins, so a household moving into either kind of home can start with keys that nobody else holds.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 90% of homes in Innisfil (2021 Census). In areas of single houses, the door nobody watches is the side or back entry. It often has the weakest lock on the property. Fitting a proper deadbolt and a reinforced strike there is a modest job that closes the obvious gap.
